Charcoal is the darkest way to buy Roseto and the one that makes the embossing work hardest. The relief is pressed into the stoneware rather than printed onto it, so against a black glaze the pattern appears as shadow and edge. Twelve pieces cover four settings: 10.75-inch dinner plates, 8.5-inch accent plates, and 14-ounce bowls, dishwasher and microwave safe.
Pattern you read in shadow
A dark glaze flattens printed decoration and flatters pressed decoration. The Roseto relief catches a line of light along each raised edge, so a plate looks textured from one side of the table and plain black from the other. Move the lamp and the pattern moves with it.
Charcoal under pale food
Dark plates are the standard trick for rice, pasta, fish, and anything cream-colored, because contrast does the plating work for you. The flip side deserves saying: a dark glaze makes an unwashed film of oil obvious, so nothing from this set gets served twice without a wash.
Fourteen ounces, six inches
The all-purpose bowl measures six inches across and 2.5 inches deep for a 14-ounce capacity, which puts it at soup-and-cereal scale rather than deep noodle-bowl scale. Four of those join four dinner plates and four accent plates to complete the imported stoneware service.
