Pumice names the color and roughly describes the effect: a gray glaze over the embossed Roseto pattern, on a stoneware body, landing somewhere near stone. Four settings come in the box, made up of 10.75-inch dinner plates, 8.5-inch accent plates, and six-inch all-purpose bowls holding 14 ounces each. Dishwasher safe, microwave safe, imported.

The most forgiving color in the line

Gray is what to pick when the kitchen is still changing its mind. It takes a white tablecloth, a wood board, black-handled cutlery, or a run of mismatched vintage serving dishes without any of them clashing, and it shows water spotting far less than a dark glaze does.

Accent plates that are not dessert plates

The 8.5-inch accent doubles as a salad plate, and that is the size carrying most of the lunches in a given week. Having four means the dinner plates can stay in the cupboard on days when nobody needs a full setting, which also keeps the washing-up proportional to the meal.

Relief instead of print

The pattern is pressed into the clay before glazing, so there is no applied surface layer for cutlery to scratch through. After a few hundred dishwasher cycles the design sits exactly as deep as it did on day one. That is the practical case for pressed decoration over anything added on top.
