Bread is the one thing a straight edge handles badly: it crushes soft crumb and skids off hard crust. This Preferred knife answers with an 8-inch serrated edge in stainless steel with a metallic finish, meant for both ends of the bread shelf. Hand washing is recommended, and the limited lifetime warranty comes with it.
What the serrations actually do
Teeth bite into crust instead of sliding across it, then saw through the interior without compressing it on the way down. The slice keeps its shape, which is noticeable on sandwich bread and decisive on an airy, open-crumb loaf that collapses under a dull edge.
Soft loaves and hard shells
The same blade is specified for soft and hard bread, so a pillowy supermarket loaf and a bakery boule with a real crust both come off it cleanly. Eight inches crosses a standard loaf in one pass rather than resetting halfway, and resetting is where ragged slices come from.
Keep it away from detergent
A serrated edge cannot be touched up on a steel the way a straight one can, so the sensible plan is to avoid dulling it in the first place. Hand wash, dry, and store it where the teeth are not knocking into other blades. Oneida’s limited lifetime warranty handles defects.
