Dover is recognized by the small five-petal flowers scrolled into the handle, a Renaissance borrowing that reads as detail rather than ornament. These four salad forks are the shorter outer fork of that service, sold apart from any boxed set: mirror finished 18/10 stainless, heavy in the hand, dishwasher safe. They suit a drawer that was bought as dinner pieces only.
What the handle actually shows
The flowers are scrolled rather than stamped flat, so light catches the edge of the handle and goes quiet when the fork lies still. Next to a plain pattern Dover looks dressed; next to a heavily sculpted one it looks restrained. That middle position is why it survives on tables that get used daily.
Finish and weight do the work
Two things separate one steel fork from another: how it is polished and how much of it there is. Dover is mirror finished and heavy, which means the handle sits back in the palm instead of tipping up when the tines are loaded. Lighter forks feel busy in the hand long before they look worn.
Salad forks as the missing four
Boxed services run short of salad forks in households that serve a first course, and dinner-only sets never had them at all. Four is the common gap: a table for eight that owns four, or a service for four assembled piece by piece. The 18/10 steel and dishwasher tolerance match whatever Dover is already in the drawer.
