Mugs do not survive in matched numbers, which is the argument for buying one at a time. This is the Ridge style from Entertain 365 in black stoneware, dishwasher safe, taken singly or four at once depending on what the shelf currently looks like. The dark glaze also hides coffee staining better than any pale finish will.

Black does not show the coffee

Tea and coffee leave a ring inside a pale mug within weeks, and scrubbing it out turns into a recurring chore nobody volunteers for. A black glaze makes that wear invisible, which is the quiet reason dark mugs stay in rotation years after the matching set they came with has gone.

Stoneware in the hand

Stoneware runs thicker and heavier than porcelain, and a mug is where the difference registers. More mass means a drink cools off more slowly and the body feels solid rather than fine. The trade is a mug that takes up a bit more shelf depth than a thin-walled cup.

Sold one at a time

A matched set of four mugs becomes a set of three by the second year, and then a set of two. Open stock is how a shelf stays coherent: add one when one goes, or build the count up gradually instead of boxing a service larger than the household needs.
